12th Annual Chum Run

The community of South Whidbey Island invites you to participate in the 12th Annual Chum Run on Sunday, June 1, 2008.  Come and enjoy our beautiful rural environment after a short ferry ride from Mukilteo.  The race takes place on the groomed paths of South Whidbey Community Park, which are a runner’s delight and a welcome break from hard pavement.

We take pride in making the Chum Run a special event; from our highly prized northwest designed “Chum Salmon” t-shirts and distinctive medals to our after-race snacks of homemade cookies and smoked salmon. Proceeds from the race benefit the South Whidbey High School Track and Cross Country programs along with the South Whidbey Parks and Recreation Scholarship Fund.

Whether you are a competitive runner or a casual jogger, the Chum Run is a fun event for everyone.  Make a day of it and enjoy the sights and sounds of Whidbey Island after the race.

Race Description:  5K run, walk, and team competition.

Course Description:  The race occurs on wide, groomed, forest paths with a few moderate hills.  The race makes two loops around the course.

Where:  South Whidbey Community Park, 5495 Maxwelton Road, Langley.  The park is located only 10 minutes from the Clinton ferry terminal (see driving directions below).

Price:  $20 advance registration; $25 day of race.
              Students:  $20 (with a t-shirt) or $10 (without a t-shirt).  No late registration fee.

When:  Sunday, June 1, 2008, at 10:00 am (the starting time allows for 'off-island competitors' to more conveniently participate in the race)

Awards:  The top male and female runners along
with the top three winning team members will
each receive a gift certificate for a pair of running
shoes (brand of your choice).  Medals will be
awarded to the top three male and female runners
and the top three winning team members.
Ribbons will be awarded to the top three male
and female runners in each 5-year increment age
group from 10 to 80 years old.

“Age Group” Team Competition:  Running with
your friends as a team is a fun way to enjoy the
Chum Run and one of the highlights of the race.
(Team members are also part of the individual competition.)   A team can be made up of three or more runners of any age or gender.  The team score is the combined age group ranking of the top three runners.   The lowest score wins.  “Age Group Scoring” creates a level playing field for all ages and genders.  The strategy, of course, is to find team members who are competitive in their respective age groups.  Winning team members from the top three teams receive gift certificates for running shoes.  Prizes are also given to the team with the “The Most Original” team name and "The Best Team Costume", as judged by the crowd.

Kid's Run:  The 'Fry Run', for children ages 2-10 years
old, is held immediately after the Chum Run and before
the awards ceremony.  All children will receive a prize
(no prize will be awarded for winning the race).
