Beginning Pottery

Learn the basic of hand-building and use of the potter's wheel this winter/spring!  You will learn simple techniques and experiment with slips, glazes and other surface decoration techniques.  Make a variety of clay objects using your newfound skills and set your creativity free.  Each 4-week session will be a sensory delight and a great creative outlet.

Learn basic chord
progressions
fundamental to all
western music, first

strumming and finger-picking patterns.  You will have the opportunity to develop a solid foundation in reading both music and tablature, playing melodies and rhythm.  Learn correct right and left hand technique.  Learn music theory, which outlines the formulas and patterns of music.  Songs will be derived from both traditional and contemporary sources.  Instructor offers patience guidance for you to learn at your own pace.  by the end of this course, you will have the resources to play many songs in different styles.  Some loaner acoustic guitars are available.

Intermediate Guitar

Ready to take your playing to the next level?  If you feel rock solid in first position major and minor chords, then this is the course for you!  Geared towards folks who have some playing experience and would like either a refresher or to expand their playing possibilities.  This class focuses on developing fluidity in navigating the neck of the guitar while learning the basics of different styles - folk, rock, blues, country and jazz.  This course gives you the tools to play basic chord shapes and major scale patterns covering the entire neck of the guitar.  Learn basic chord progressions fundamental to American roots and contemporary music, the five basic positions and major scale patterns.  We will cover various picking styles, rhythms and music theory.  Songs will be derived from traditional and contemporary sources.  Instructor offers patient guidance for you to learn at your own pace.  By the end of this course, you will have the resources to play any melody or chord anywhere on the fretboard.  Twelve lessons.
 

 
 

 

 

Drawing Class

Discover drawing in a supportive atmosphere!  In this class, you will discover your natural ability to draw through exercises that emphasize seeing.  You will learn basic drawing principles and techniques including line and contour, value, form/shapes, space, proportion, composition and perspective.  Projects focus on contour, texture, shading and shapes.  You will also have the opportunity to create realistic and/or abstract drawings.  Working from photos, objects, still-life and the imagination, you will develop your ability to see and translate that visual experience into drawing.  Bring supplies to first class - click here for list

Creative Dance

Your preschooler can learn to move and dance!  Explore basic dance positions and steps using fun and interactive themes.  Develop motor skills, fundamnental coordination and body awareness through fun and creative movement.  children may wear dance attireor comfortable clothing and bare feet.  Experience the joy of dance!

Mom/Dad & Me Dance

For our youngest dancers:  come stretch, jump, move and dance with your child.  Play games, sing songs and interact through movement.  A great introduction to dance.  Dress in comfortable clothing and shoes or socks.  4 weeks.

Guitar Camp

This first annual guitar camp will help beginners get started and will be a valuable learning experience for those who already have some guitar knowledge.  We will separate guitars, banjos, etc. out from bowed strings and have this camp for fretted instruments.  Instructor Josephina Hunner has years of experience teaching guitar and mandolin and can help those who want to learn jazz guitar, plus she knows DADGAD tuning.  Instructor Linda Goode has taught a variety of strings including ethnic instruments.  Linda's experience with Suzuki method includes students as young as 3-5, who would be accompanied by a parent.  Both will incorporate music theory in the program.  For more information about Island Strings, please see our website at www.islandstrings.com.  A limited number of guitars are available to rent from instructor for $5 plus deposit.

Make your own Sushi at Home

Getting tired of the same old thing for dinner?  How about sushi?!  Learn what equipment you need and where to get it as well as where to obtain organic and locally available ingredients.  We'll put it all together to create vegetarian sushi or varieties that contain cooked or raw seafood including cod, tuna, smoked salmon, crab and scallops.  Taught by a Japanese cooking instructor.  Children 8+ years may participate for $25 if accompanied by an adult.  Fee includes lunch, sushi mat & a spatula and recipes.

New to macrobiotic cooking?  Not sure what it is?  Find out why macrobiotics, which originated in Japan, has become so popular amount health-conscious gourmets.  Participate in this hands-on cooking class and learn how to cook four dishes and one dessert using organic whole grains, vegetables & beans.  Learn how to obtain organic & locally available ingredients.  Discover the secret to making food tasty without animal proteins, dairy products or refined flours and sugars!  Begins with a brief talk on macrobiotics.  Taught by a Japanese cooking instructor.  Fee includes lunch.
